Cost of a flush

How much does it cost a flush of your toilet commode? At the low water consumption charges here in Sri Lanka, it wouldn’t cost you more than few cents I guess. But just imagine how many liters of purified and drinkable water are wasted daily to flush out your exhausts. Be it your no.1 or no.2 job, you would need at least two liters of water to flush it out. In a world where people die for a drop of water, isn’t this a massive wastage of the most critical natural resource? I wonder if we can use non-purified and non-drinkable water such as sea water for this purpose.

This might not sound practical for domestic needs, but for large business and office complexes and multi tiered apartment complexes, it should be possible. All you need is to have a separate water supply line, which pumps non-purified water for your toilets. In coastal areas, you can easily use sea water, which are naturally hygienic because of its saltiness whereas in inland areas, you can use water from lakes, canals and rivers.

I remember reading on an old magazine that if there’s ever going to be a 3rd world war; it will be triggered because of water. It has become such a critical and demanding commodity. It is known that the natural water resources are shifting from southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere and countries like Australia are already experiencing the effects of it. Hence it is very important that we have a proper management of water resources and discover methodologies of effective water usage. Your toilet commode might be a place to start with.

My rain water tank is connected to two toilets at home. I don’t really have a large water tank, it is 2000lt and even if there is no rain for a while, I am still able to flush the toilets with it up to 6 weeks.
I strongly believe that a water tank must be compulsory in every new house built.
Lets face it, a litre of drinking water is more expensive than a litre of petrol, yet we flush it down the drain!

    Cheers
